Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Over the holidays, I suffered my first-ever broken bones after slipping on ice and ended up at the North Shore Glenbrook Hospital emergency room. Two weeks later, I had follow-up surgery at North Shore Skokie Hospital, and now five weeks after my injuries, I am well on the path to recovery.

I just wanted to salute the various doctors and other medical professionals for not only a fine job in making me well again but also for their caring and compassion. During my time in the hospitals and during rehabilitation, I was amazed at the number of professionals that came from Oakton Community College.

In the emergency room, my EMT was an Oakton graduate, as was one of the nurses. Then, following my surgery, my nurse assistant was a current Oakton student working toward her nursing degree. Before surgery, my phlebotomist took great care with taking blood. It turns out he studied at Oakton, too. I had a physical therapist work with me in the hospital, and his assistant was a current PTA student at Oakton as well. Finally, my at-home physical therapist studied at Oakton where he earned a scholarship before graduating and completing his degree at Northwestern.

What great community resources we have on the North Shore! Thank you to all who have helped me to (literally) get back on my feet, and thank you Oakton for providing a path for students to work in the health care field.
