A man is in custody after a woman died early Friday in a domestic situation in Hammond, police said.

It was the second shooting death of a woman in Hammond this week.

Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Richard Hoyda said in a release that officers responded to a call of a possible shooting victim in the 900 block of Becker Street around 1 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found a 21-year-old victim at a residence on that block.

Officers called an ambulance and the victim was taken to a local hospital, where she later died, Hoyda said.

Family members gathered at the residence declined to comment Friday.

Detectives determined a 24-year-old man with whom the victim had a prior relationship is a “person of interest,” Hoyda said. He was picked up Friday afternoon in Chicago and is now in custody, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Lt. Michael Daniels at 219-852-2961 or the general detective number of 219-852-2906.

Friday’s homicide is the second domestic-related homicide this week.

On Wednesday, an Illinois man was charged with murder, among other counts, in connection with a triple shooting Monday in Hammond that left his ex-girlfriend, Carmelle Erbie Cajuste, 44, dead and two other people critically wounded.

Joseph Edwards Barner, 32, was arrested Monday night at his mother’s home in Lynwood, Ill., after law enforcement persuaded him to exit the home, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Barner was charged in Lake Superior Court with murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon, all felonies.
