A 51-year-old man who barricaded himself in a Darien home Thursday morning was found dead when police entered the home.

Darien police Cmdr. Gerry Piccoli said the man was found dead about 11 a.m.

“He never answered our calls,” Piccoli said. “We entered the house and he was deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Earlier in the day, the man’s wife and two children made their way out of the house, Piccoli said. They were taken into protective custody by police.

Piccoli said he didn’t know what sparked the incident.

“All I know is that they were discussing family matters,” he said.

The situation that began at 6:26 a.m. in the 1600 block of Darien Club Drive.

According to a news release, the man had displayed a firearm. While en route, units were advised that the husband had fired the weapon.

Piccoli said police were never able to make contact with the man, but that they were trying to get his cooperation because there was a rather large dog inside the house.

After several attempts to contact the man were unsuccessful, a robot was sent into the house.

The dog inside the house was unharmed and was inside a cage, Piccoli said.

At the scene, Darien Ald. Joseph Kenny said it was a domestic situation and said there was no threat to neighbors.
