Chicago Sinfonietta: Young musicians from various corners of the city will join conductor Mei-Ann Chen and the orchestra for its annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program will include the “Ode to Joy” finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, along with music of Vivaldi and Vaughan Williams. Lyric Opera — “The Magic Flute”: Director Neil Armfield’s new production treats Mozart’s popular singspiel as a grand show put on by kids in the backyard of their parents’ suburban Chicago home, circa 1960. And it works. A strong cast includes Matthew Polenzani as the princely hero Tamino, with Christiane Karg as Pamina, Adam Plachetka as Papageno, Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night and Christof Fischesser as Sarastro. Winter Chamber Music Festival: The Bienen School of Music’s 21st annualcelebration continues with two concerts. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio will perform Brahms’ Piano Trio in B major, Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s “Pas de Trois.” At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the Dover Quartet (Northwestern’s quartet-in-residence) will play string quartets by Haydn, Britten and Smetana (“From My Life”).
