Chicago Public Schools says it will try to speed up the process of finding new uses for buildings shuttered by school closings in 2013 by putting about 30 vacant properties on the market.
Putting the remaining properties up for bid “will accelerate the reuse and revitalization of former school sites and help spur new value from properties throughout the city,” CPS spokesman Michael Passman said in a statement.
Bids are due by March 13, the district said. CPS would then negotiate with the top two bidders and consult with the local alderman before making final decisions on each potential sale.
Privately operated charter schools will not be allowed to take over the closed buildings, the district said.
The district closed almost 50 schools in 2013. The first three empty school buildings were put up for bid in August 2014. The former Peabody Elementary School in West Town was sold to the Svigos Asset Management Co. for $3.5 million that October. Since then, eight other buildings have been sold. Five other buildings have been “repurposed,” the district said.

Getting the remaining properties, most of them throughout the South and West sides, ready for bid has proved difficult. Some of the buildings have become targets for vandalism and are considered neighborhood eyesores.
CPS said it is requesting bids on 10 more properties unrelated to the 2013 school closings. Those include the former Montefiore Special Elementary School, which housed a district-operated program for students with special needs until it was closed in 2015.
In addition to Peabody, school buildings that have been sold and the final sales prices are:
*Leland, $201,065
*Drake, $1.5 million
*Stewart, $5.1 million
*Trumbull, $5.3 million
*Overton, $325,000
*Von Humboldt, $3.1 million
*Near North, $5.1 million
*Marconi, $100,000
