President-elect Donald Trump has been announcing his picks for cabinet heads. The purpose of those agencies is quite basic: to protect and promote the quality of our lives. The breadth of the tasks of each cabinet is indeed broad and consequential. One would wish that a department chief be well versed in the operation that he or she will run. That person should have the expertise to take over the administration of his position within a relatively short period of time: this is not the time for on the job training.

Unfortunately, some of Trump’s picks lack the experience to manage a federal government that employs hundreds of thousands of people and has a budget that runs into the billions of dollars. Regrettably, there are several examples of potential appointees not adhering to the principles of the tasks that they will be overseeing.

We need a cabinet official who understands the middle word of the EPA. We need a cabinet head who understands the meaning of labor in that agency. We need a secretary who comprehends the significance of health and human services.

We need people in power who have our best interests at heart – that’s why cabinet positions were established in the first place.
