Willson Contreras finally arrived Tuesday and he brought some hardware with him.

The Cubs rookie catcher stopped by “Windy City Live” for a live segment and was greeted with a standing ovation, even before he introduced his special “guest.” After taking a seat alongside the ABC-7 show’s hosts, he pretended like he’d forgotten something: the World Series trophy, tucked behind a curtain. Conteras grabbed it and hoisted above his head.

“It makes me feel like part of the city,” Contreras said. “It makes me feel like I’ve been here forever.”

Contreras, who played a significant role in the Cubs’ historic postseason run, likened the journey he’s been through to a rollercoaster. The ride has had many twists and turns, bringing him from Venezuela to the Dominican Summer League to four Midwestern minor-league cities before finding his way to the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in Des Moins earlier this year.

“Six months ago I was playing in Iowa,” Contreras laughed.

In June, Contreras was called up to Chicago, where he hit a home run on the first pitch he saw at the major-league level. Since, the 24-year-old has played left field and first base before settling in at catcher.

“I can play anywhere they need me and I’ll be there,” Contreras said, but added, “I like to be behind the plate better, I love my position.”

“Windy City Live” Co-host Ryan Chiaverini agreed, “I think you found a home buddy.”
