Western Springs police will not file charges in connection with a report that a Lyons Township High School student would arrive with a firearm at the south campus last week.

Deputy police chief Brian Budds said Monday that the report of a student potentially going to the school with a firearm was made after a student overheard a conversation and perceived a threat.

“The report emanated from a conversation that was overheard on a school bus,” Budds said.

The student told a parent about what had been heard and the parent contacted police at 5:39 p.m Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Budds said the department immediately contacted Lyons Township High School District 204 and launched an investigation during which a person of interest and witnesses were interviewed.

“We’re confident it was unfounded and there was no threat whatsoever,” Budds said.

No charges are being filed because “it might have been inaccurate, but it was perception. There was no intent to falsely file a report,” he said.

Although the report was unfounded, Budds said both police and school staff still believe the complaint was connected to a physical altercation that occurred about 3:15 p.m. Oct. 24 among some students at the school, 4900 Willow Springs Road.

Four boys from Countryside, one 14-years-old, one 16-year-old and two who are 15, have been charged with mob action and battery as a result of the fight in which one person suffered a minor injury.

A 15-year-old from Brookfield also was charged with trespassing to state property at 3:35 p.m. Oct. 25 after trespassing at the school where he was in the parking lot.

According to Budds, the 15-year-old from Brookfield had been targeted in the fight. He was not one of the instigators.

“However, school staff elected to issue the Brookfield youth a trespass warning, which he violated on Oct. 25,” Budds said.
