To the editor,

Lee Gaines’ August article about East Prairie School brought attention to the community engagement process conducted during the spring of 2016. The district continues to proceed with these informational meetings and will host another in the form of a town hall meeting on Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the East Prairie Learning Center. We encourage all East Prairie School Districts residents to attend. The session will allow voters the opportunity to gain information regarding the ballot question being put forth in November. The question to finance $47.3 million in bonds to build a new school is an important one.

The meeting will allow residents to hear firsthand about the challenges, strengths and opportunities for growth presented by the facilitating team. The team, composed of community residents, gave school tours, canvassed the neighborhood and mailed invitations regarding the process to district residents. They continue to share information about the school at www.Vision73.net.

East Prairie School was built in eight separate sections. The earliest part of the structure was built in 1950 and additions continued throughout the ’60s. The oldest part of the structure is approximately 66 years old, with the newest being mid-40s. Additionally, with an estimated 600-700 people walking the halls and sitting in the classrooms each day, the building shows significant wear including some structural complications.

We invite you to attend the meeting to gain more information. School tours will be available before and after the meeting. Child care will be provided. A panel of experts in the areas of facilities, finance and building will be available during the meeting, similar to session four held in May, and will answer questions from the audience. Every district resident is encouraged to attend. Please direct questions about the event to the district office at (847) 673-1141.
