A Scottish tradition in Lake Forest attracted about 1,800 people on Sept. 24.
Bagpipes and Bonfire featured up to 100 bagpipers in a parade at Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve, an evening bonfire and sky divers in kilts, said Holly Meeks, director of marketing and outreach at Lake Forest Open Lands.
The origin of the event goes back to the McCutcheon family.
“They started it as a neighborhood gathering to burn the brush that had accumulated,” Meeks said. “Several of our board members remember as young people going to this event.”
Lake Forest Open Lands started Bagpipes and Bonfire 29 years ago at the Skokie River Nature Preserve as its primary fundraiser. In 2003, it moved to Middlefork Nature Preserve and six years ago sky divers were added.
Over the years the event has grown from several hundred attendees to its current size, Meeks said.
