Hear John Coltrane’s 1965 opus like never before: paired with a work by local modern tap collective M.A.D.D. Rhythms that combines Coltrane’s chant-driven tunes, African dance, and even a Mos Def sample.

Matana Roberts

Photo: Paula Court

Once one of the youngest musicians affiliated with Chicago’s experimental jazz collective Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, this former local spins a blend of ’60s free jazz with heady, modern electronics (see her 12-album series Coin Coin, an exploration of African American history through free jazz). She’ll perform two solo sets on alto sax.

Dee Alexander Quartet with Dwight Trible

Alexander, Chicago’s daring and unpredictable jazz vocalist, performs a series of duets with West Coast crooner Trible, who spent most of his career singing with free-jazz pioneer Pharoah Sanders. In other words, this set could be titled Powerhouse Squared.
