Construction has begun on the more than 30-year-old fire station that will help expedite the response time to the Briar Ridge area and the commercial district around U.S. 41, Fire Chief Joseph Kruzan said.
“The whole idea behind staffing that station was that we want to have an advanced support life unit on the north end of our response area,” Kruzan said.
The facility upgrades will include firefighter living quarters that will permit Plum Creek to transition to a fully operational fire station.
Kruzan said he hopes to have a staff of four to man the station 24/7 after the construction is completed.
The Schererville Town Council approved a bid to begin renovations on the Plum Creek Fire Station during June’s town council meeting.
The council unanimously awarded a bid Wednesday of $380,769 to Pangere Corp., of Gary.
Kruzan said the department is excited about having a firehouse in a neighborhood. “It’s always reassuring to the residents to know there’s help right around the corner.”
Construction is expected to be completed by Nov. 30, Kruzan said.
The facility would be Schererville’s second station staffed around the clock by firefighters.
