A Waukegan man has been arrested and charged with shooting a man in Beach Park on Monday, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 38500 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park at 1:13 a.m. Monday for a report of a man with a gunshot wound. The deputies found a 42-year-old Waukegan man who had suffered a single gunshot wound to the shoulder, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Det. Christopher Covelli.

The man was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Covelli said.

According to Covelli, the victim gave deputies a description of the man, whom he said fled eastbound on foot after approaching him and shooting him. Covelli added that although canine units were brought to the scene, the offender was not immediately located.

Covelli said a preliminary investigation determined that the victim was in the parking lot of the Shoreline Terrace Apartments, speaking with an acquaintance, when a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt approached and shot him.

After working through the overnight hours, Covelli said, detectives identified Brandon A. Brown, 26, of the 1900 block of 10th Street in Waukegan, as the alleged offender in the shooting. Covelli added that the victim and the alleged offender knew each other, and it appears the victim was specifically targeted.

After obtaining an arrest warrant, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force, along with sheriff’s detectives, located Brown Tuesday as he returned to his home, Covelli said, and officers attempted to take him into custody.

Covelli said Brown attempted to flee in his vehicle and struck an unmarked sheriff’s squad car in the process. Detectives were then able to take Brown into custody without further incident, he said.

Brown was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, aggravated battery, also a felony, and two misdemeanor charges — possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. Brown was found to be in possession of more than 35 grams of cannabis, according to officials.

Brown is currently being held in the Lake County Jail on $500,000 bail, with a court appearance scheduled Oct. 3.
