If a goal post falls on a football field and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

One of the football goal posts at Theodore Roosevelt High School recently collapsed but no one can pinpoint exactly when or how it fell. The goal post has left a trail of unanswered questions in the wake of its mysterious collapse. Who? When? How?

Craig Buckingham, athletic director at Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy, said he’s unsure of what happened to the goal post in the south end zone, but noticed it was on the ground when he returned to work Monday morning.

“Everybody points the finger at everybody,” Buckingham said. “They said it was an act of God.”

Whether it was Mother Nature, natural erosion of a goal post that’s more than 40 years old or a heinous act of vandalism, the goal post will be restored, officials said.

“I don’t know what happened to it but we’re going to get it repaired,” Charles Prewitt, supervisor of Building Grounds and Maintenance for Gary Community School Corp, said. Prewitt said the goal post was still up when he left the football field at 10:30 p.m. Saturday after the Gary Community School Corp.’s 7th Annual Michael Jackson Tribute performance.

“It happened sometime in between Saturday night and Monday morning,” he said.

Prewitt said they are currently negotiating with a contractor but will not be able to finalize a contract until receiving approval from the superintendent and board of trustees.

Prewitt said it’s still unknown whether the goal post will be welded back together or if the school corporation will purchase a new one.

Donna Henry, principal of Roosevelt College and Career Academy, said they’re working on fixing the situation but refused to comment any further. Without any security footage at Roosevelt’s football field and a mute community, the truth may never be discovered.

Roosevelt’s next scheduled home football game is Sept. 17 against Thea Bowman.
