Participants in the first Cardboard Canoe Regatta in Lake Forest dashed across the sand at Forest Park Beach the afternoon of Aug. 27. They grabbed oars, hauled their duct taped boats into the water and attempted to set sail.

Of the six teams, two made it out, around a buoy and back. Others found themselves and their self-built boats in the water.

“One boat right from the start fell apart,” said Aaron Dalzot, program manager of the lakefront.

Dalzot brought the idea for a cardboard canoe regatta with him from the Parks and Recreation Department of Orange County, Fla., where he used to work.

I think going forward, it will be a more popular event,” Dalzot said. “Now there’s a buzz around it.”
