A 19-year-old Streamwood man accused of robbing a St. Charles convenience store and attempting to do the same at an Elgin gas station wants a judge to reduce his $400,000 bail, according to court records.
Kevin J. Hamilton remains in Kane County Jail charged with armed robbery and attempted armed robbery in connection to incidents Aug. 6 and 7, officials said. He appeared in court Thursday when a public defender was appointed to represent him, and the bond reduction request was made. He is scheduled to return to court Sept. 8 for a hearing on the bond motion.
According to Elgin police and court documents, Hamilton was identified as the person seen staking out and then running from a gas station on South McLean Boulevard in the early morning hours of Aug. 6. Officers saw him cross several lanes of traffic before entering a car to leave the area.
Just before 4 a.m. the next day, St. Charles police responded to a convenience store on West Main Street after a report of a man — later identified as Hamilton — pulling a gun on a clerk and demanding money. Hamilton fled with an unspecified amount of cash, but an Elgin police K-9 was able to track him to an apartment occupied by four people. Police determined Hamilton to be the robbery suspect and arrested him, St. Charles police said.
St. Charles investigators found a silver handgun, a starter pistol, used in the robbery in a tree line near the apartment building, police said.
