The Porter County United Way has been selected to receive $20,744 for its emergency food and shelter programs.

The Department of Homeland Security announced the award Wednesday. Porter County was one of 86 counties in Indiana to receive funding through the federal program.

“This allows the people in Porter County to have a better quality of life and meet those emergency needs,” Anicia Kosky, Porter County United Way Director of Community Impact, said.

The local board will review funding request applications and recommend distribution, Kosky said.

Last year, funds were distributed to the Porter Township Emergency Food Pantry, Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry, Salvation Army-Porter County Unit, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Gary (for work in Porter County), and Alice’s House.

The deadline for applications to be received is Aug. 17. All applicants must attend a mandatory meeting on Aug. 18 at United Way of Porter County at 951 Eastport Centre Drive, Valparaiso.
