If you want to attract kids to your library, get messy.

The Lake Forest Library recently invited children in its summer reading program to paint or draw on large sheets of canvas on the library’s front lawn.

Called “Big and Messy,” it’s the second time the library has held the event.

“We did it the previous year inside,” said Lorie Rohrer, head of children’s services. “It wasn’t nearly as big as this.”

A total of 108 people attended the July 28 event, Rohrer said.

The library supplied paint, chalk and pens to participants. The success of the event has left library staff planning next year’s painting day.

“We’re thinking for next year how to make it even messier,” Rohrer said.
