A teenage boy shot a man and a 16-year-old boy who was on the man’s Austin neighborhood porch with him last month, then apologized to the younger victim because he only meant to shoot the man, prosecutors said Thursday.
Desmone Hearnes, 17, was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail Thursday in the attack about 8:35 p.m. June 29 in the 4900 block of West Ferdinand Street.
The younger boy and the man were on the man’s porch when Hearnes walked up and shot the two from the sidewalk, Assistant State’s Attorney Becky Walters told Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Thursday. After the shooting, Hearnes told the 16-year-old that he was sorry for the shooting, and that he only meant to hit the man, Walters said.
The man suffered gunshot wounds to the hand, thigh and calf, with a fractured leg and a nerve damage in his hand, prosecutors said. The boy suffered gunshot wounds to the armpit, forearm and upper chest. Both were treated at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Hearnes, of the 4200 block of West Washington Boulevard, is scheduled to return to court Aug. 8.
