“The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye.” About this time every summer many of us in the Midwest are looking forward to that delicious taste of homegrown sweet corn. In fact, there have been times when our family made a meal of nothing but fresh picked sweet corn and tomatoes.
Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club wants to give everyone the chance to eat as much corn as they can devour from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 5. This corny evening will take place at the Urschel Pavilion/Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso.
The $10 ticket purchased in advance ($12 at the door) treats you to more than all you can eat corn. You will have your choice of brat or hot dog, chips, cookie and a soft drink or water. Indiana Beverage will also be there with a beer garden for those over 21. And there will even be entertainment by guitarist Angelo Cicco and The Nashville Machine. It will all be under cover too, so if it rains or is overly sunny, we’ll be protected.
Wow, to eat all the corn I want without having to shuck it and get sweaty and sticky from the silks, plus have all the extras sounds like a real treat. This is the first year for the group’s Corn Roast fundraiser, and what else is really special is that all the money raised that evening will stay right here in our county to help children, non-profits, and families in need.
Tickets can be purchased from any Kiwanis member, or email me at [email protected]

and I’ll get them to you. And another plus — preshcoolers are free. MMM! Good.If you have ever been lucky enough to know or befriend anyone with Down’s syndrome, or any other disability, then you probably already know that many of their dreams are very similar to ours. The big difference is that, often times, there are few people that realize their potential, or expect great things from them. That’s why Chasing Dreams is such an important group for both parents and kids, so there is someone to listen and guide these beautiful boys and girls to follow their dreams, whether they are large or small dreams, whether they are present or future.
This non-profit is not as well known as some, but it sure is an important one. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 25, there will be a very special fundraiser to help continue to make a difference in the lives of children with special needs. It will be held at Avalon Manor in Hobart, and the evening will be delightful from the yummy hors d’ oeuvres, desserts, and drinks to the beautiful music while you enjoy deciding what silent auction item you just can’t live without.
The cost for the evening is $100 per person to help make young people with special needs follow their dreams. Please go to www.chasingdreams.org, or call 219-299-9649 and make some dreams come true.
The Livin’ It Up Festival at Zao’s last Sunday can only be described as an unbelievable success. The weather was perfect (thank you God), the place was great (thank you Don White and staff), the music was terrific (thank you bands), the crowd was awesome (thank you everyone), and the Porter County Special Olympics athletes are the benefactors, as the dollars raised will help keep them having opportunities to grow socially, physically, and emotionally. Thanks to all the people who made it happen, and I’m already looking forward to next year. You are all pet persons of the week. I hope you have a great day because you deserve it. Thanks for reading, Fly your flag.
