The Lake Forest Police Department is urging residents to lock their cars after several car thefts have been reported in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff over the last month.
Between June 15 and July 14, six vehicles were stolen from the two communities, according to a news release.
The stolen vehicles include a Lexus SUV, two Audi SUVs, a Dodge Challenger, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Porsche. Several vehicles were later found in Chicago and returned to their owners, police said.
One of the stolen vehicles is currently being held by Chicago police after it was used in a drive-by shooting that resulted in a homicide, police said.
Chicago police have arrested several juveniles who have allegedly admitted to traveling into Barrington, Highland Park, Lake Bluff and Lake Forest to drive around in the early morning hours looking for unlocked cars with keys inside, according to the release.
High-end SUVs and sports cars are their target of choice, but they will search any vehicle they find unlocked in the hopes of finding keys, purses and wallets, according to the release.
