A damaged meter that started leaking natural gas into a business in Long Grove closed Illinois Route 83 in both directions for nearly an hour and a half Monday evening, authorities said.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., employees at 83RV, 25514 N. Route 83, reported smelling natural gas inside the business, according to a statement from the Countryside Fire Protection District in Vernon Hills. Emergency responders closed Route 83 in both directions, while they and workers from North Shore Gas shut off the gas line, and checked area businesses and homes for any hazards, the district said.

Battalion chief Kevin Wodrich said Tuesday the leak came from a damaged meter in a parking lot. No one was hurt in the incident.

“It could have been caused by someone accidentally backing into it,” Wodrich said.

Authorities, though, still are determining what started the leak, he said.

Firefighters from Libertyville, Lincolnshire, Mundelein and Lake Zurich assisted the Countryside Fire Protection District with checking area businesses and residences for other leaks. But no other leaks were found, according to the district.
