Three inmates and a jail deputy were taken to area hospitals after a fight at the Cook County Jail division that houses the facility’s youngest and most violent inmates, officials said.

The fight started between two inmates at Division 9 in the jail about 4 p.m., according to statements from the Cook County sheriff’s office. Other inmates joined the fight, with one using what sheriff’s officials believe was a pen or another writing instrument to injure three other inmates, according to the statement.

The three men, ages 20, 25 and 27, suffered non-life-threatening puncture wounds in the fight, said Cara Smith, a spokeswoman for the sheriff.

“The fight was quickly subdued” when a staff member used pepper spray to break it up, according to the statement.

The three inmates and one corrections deputy, who suffered minor injuries from exposure to the pepper spray, were taken to area hospitals for treatment, Smith said.

All three inmates are awaiting trial on murder charges.
