Bay Hill Club & Lodge is officially known as Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. That is not false advertising.
The golf resort in Orlando is Palmer’s winter home and hosts his PGA Tour event, the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The actual golf course is generally referred to as Bay Hill, and it’s been making fans for decades.
One of them was Palmer, who played an exhibition match against Jack Nicklaus at Bay Hill in 1965, four years after the course opened. He was so impressed, he bought the place.
Palmer said it reminded him of the courses he’d play in college at Wake Forest. It’s a combination of pine trees, lakes with a few elevation changes. The Florida Citrus Open moved there in 1979 and was renamed the Bay Hill Invitational, then the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Pros still make the annual pilgrimage to pay homage to the King. You don’t have to have a PGA Tour card to play Bay Hill. You do have to stay at the resort, though. That means you’ll get to play holes like No. 6.
That’s a monstrous par 5 around a lake where John Daly hit seven balls in the water during the 1998 tournament. He took an 18 on the hole.
The finishing hole is a memorable par 4 requiring an approach shot over water to an L-shaped green protected by rocks up front. Tiger Woods won the tournament eight times, many of them in dramatic fashion on that hole.
Palmer doesn’t play much anymore, but he still has an office above the clubhouse and dines in the clubhouse. So even if they don’t birdie the final hole, golfers might get to meet Palmer. That’s a golf memory of a lifetime.
