The Hammond Civic Center recently was transformed into a mucho colorful, upbeat gala as hundreds of people came out for the 12th Annual Cinco De Mayo Celebration.
The Ruiz family of Merrillville was one of the first in line.
“We came to the U.S. only 10 years ago and it’s good that we carry on our traditions here,” Leticia Jean Ruiz said. “We learned our music and dance at an early age and we must keep them for our children.”
The evening’s agenda included authentic Mexican cuisine and live entertainment.
The fun atmosphere began as Duo Romantico greeted the crowd with both traditional and modern songs.
Union Benefica Mexicana Queen Angelina Lomeri presented a customary dance, complete with colorful headdress.
A wide aisle in front of the stage was formed so the large audience could have a better view of her high-energy performance.
Visitors also were treated to more than an hour of lively dance numbers by members of Ballet Folkorico Yolotzin. Like Lomeri, they glided up and down the wide aisle, giving visitors a birds eye view of their show.
“These kids are really good. I’m amazed at how professional they look, ” Jazzmine Gerald of Hammond said as she watched a Mexican Hat Dance performed by Jose Garcia, 9 and his sister Brisa Garcia, 13. “All of these bright colors can put anyone in a good mood.”
Other traditional numbers were presented, many with the vivid colors of red, green and white, the colors of the Mexican flag, reflected in performers’ costumes.
“This isn’t my culture, but I absolutely love the way these dances are performed,” said Krissy Long of Highland. “I love to learn about other cultures and coming to a celebration like today is a good start. People should open themselves up to customs other than their own. They may be surprised at how much fun they can be.”
Following the performances, the remainder of the evening was covered by the music of two popular local bands — Erik Antonio y Su Mariachi and Together.
Jeramiah Brown of Hammond said the event was an interesting way for residents from different backgrounds to grow closer.

“Looking around at our table, I’m seeing many nationalities represented here,” Brown said. “But we’re all here for the same reason — to enjoy this delicious Mexican food and experience the closeness this culture has with their children. Their dance routines are amazing.”
