Buffalo Grove police believe they solved 16 car burglaries and the theft of a vehicle with a pair of arrests on May 1.
Officers arrested two boys, one from Des Plaines and one from Evanston, after the last man they allegedly stole from caught them and called the police.
According to a Buffalo Grove press release, the pair admitted to stealing from cars in a week-long string that started on April 23. The police also suspect the two of stealing a vehicle April 23 that had been parked in the 900 block of Hobson Drive.
According to the final arrest report, a resident of the 1100 block of Brandywyn Court awoke at 5:40 a.m. May 1 to the sound of his garage door opening and went outside to see what caused the noise. The report indicates he found the Evanston boy sitting in his car’s driver seat, rifling through its contents.
“He asked him what he was doing, and he continued looking through the car,” the report read.
The police report indicated that the homeowner was able to coax some cooperation out of the intruder, who claimed to be homeless and abandoned by his mother. The two conversed further, and the homeowner learned that his unexpected guest was working with another young man — who walked up to the house at that time.
As he looked outside, the homeowner saw that his other vehicle, which was parked on the driveway, also had been burglarized. The report indicated the Evanston teen had opened the unlocked door and used the garage door opener to get inside the residence.
The intruder ended their discussion and walked away with his cohort, and the homeowner then called the police. Minutes later, police officers arrested them near the intersection of Brandywyn Court and Deerfield Parkway.
Both boys will be petitioned to juvenile court, Buffalo Grove police said.
