Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

What? You haven’t shopped for Mother’s Day yet? It might be a good idea to get your mom and/or wife something she’ll enjoy so you still are the No. 1 guy in her life.

I have the best suggestion, and you don’t even have to go to the store. On May 21, the Valparaiso YMCA is hosting a daylong inspirational women’s event, Joy in the Journey. The Y Faith committee invites all women to this special event. The cost of $25 includes a continental breakfast and lunch, the choice of three inspirational workshops, and begins with a keynote speaker who will make everyone hopefully feel “joy in the journey” and a glad heart getting stronger with God in body, mind and spirit.

OK, guys, go to www.valpoymca.org, or stop at the Y and pick up a registration form. And all you women who don’t get this for a gift can go to the website or pick up a registration form or two and share this special day with a friend. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. The YMCA is at 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive, off Calumet Avenue. Happy Mother’s Day!

Many Porter County neighbors are grateful for the United Way of Porter County for the many ways our local organization helps agencies, individuals and families who are in need of special community services. There are 39 groups and agencies served by our United Way, and the need for financial assistance continues to grow.

The UWPC’s sixth annual golf outing is a most important fundraiser for the organization and will be May 23 at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton. The 27-hole, picturesque golf course will be hosting all you avid golfers while you are aiding those neighbors who are the recipients of their services. Call your friends, bring your employees, challenge your buddies and register to enjoy the day.

The cost per golfer is $240 and includes golf and cart; snacks and drinks — including beer — while you golf; hot sandwiches for lunch; barbecue buffet reception for dinner; entry into a number of contests (i.e. closest to the pin for each foursome); longest drive; two chances to win a car; poker scratch-off card and more. There will also be silent auction items to bid on.

Gosh, it sounds so fun, I wish I was a golfer. The day will begin at 10:30 a.m., and a shotgun start will be at noon. Please don’t wait too long to register, as only 180 golfers will be accepted. I think the United Way staff wanted to guarantee a sunny day, but this is Northwest Indiana, so they couldn’t take the chance. Please call Melissa at 219-464-3583 if you need more information, or go to [email protected] or [email protected]

to register for a fun day.

Did you see it? The sun is still really in the sky and shines once in a while in our neighborhoods. And I hope it shines in the hearts and minds of all of us.

When I was a kid, and even when our children were young, no one had to teach us to be civil — it was an “automatic” at home, just as respect, manners and caring were. It puzzles me to try and understand where those things stopped being important enough to be a part of every parent’s job to demonstrate that at home.

Where did it all get lost? Maybe when some parents began concentrating on their own lives more than on the lives of their children or trying to be their children’s friend instead of guiding their actions, or even because unfortunately there are too many single-parent households — maybe.

No matter how or why it happened, I applaud the Merrillville High School club called STAND, which stands for Socially Together And Naturally Diverse. They are becoming leaders in discouraging bullying, encouraging acceptance and taking that message to other students and schools. The numbers for the good far outweigh those who think that hate and bullying are the answer, so hooray for every high school student who STANDs tall. You are all my pet persons of the week. I hope you all have a great day because you deserve it. Thanks for reading. Fly your flag.
