Wilmette resident Craig Sonnenschein was out walking along downtown Park Avenue on May 3 when he stopped to talk about Mother’s Day – from plans for this year’s celebration to his favorite memories.
Q: Mother’s Day is coming up. Do you have any plans to celebrate?
A: My wife has decided that she’ll be hosting Mother’s Day for all my in-laws, so it won’t be a relaxing day, but it’s something she really wants to do, and that’s the important thing. Just for her, we have a traditional gift for Mother’s Day. Every year, I give her a Mother’s Day mug that has a picture of our children, usually with her. I love taking pictures of the family, so that’s something that I really like to do.
Q: Do you have a favorite Mother’s Day memory?
A: We spent last Mother’s Day at the (Chicago) Botanic Garden (in Glencoe). It wasn’t great weather, but it was a beautiful time, and we got great pictures of the kids.
Q: Once Mother’s Day is over, spring is truly underway. Do you have some favorite spring or summer activities you’re looking forward to?

A: We’ve developed a bunch of interests since we moved up here a couple of years ago. We love going to the Wilmette pool (Centennial Park pool complex, 2300 Old Glenview Road), and the (Community) Recreation Center (at 3000 Glenview Road.) We also love going to Gillson Park.
Q: Do you have a pet?
A: We have no pets currently. I think the plan is to get a dog in a few years. Our kids really love animals, so we’ll probably wait until they’re a little older so that they can help be responsible for the dog. I’m a dog person and a cat person, and possibly a little more of a cat person, but my wife’s allergic to cats, so it will be a dog household.
Q: Finally, as the days get longer, it’s time to ask – are you an early bird, or a night owl?
A: I’m definitely an early bird! Recently I’ve been getting out of bed at a quarter of six in the morning. Three days a week I try to get out and run five or six miles or so. I have done it later in the day, but it doesn’t feel right.
