He may have been a teacher in the Duneland School system, but Ralph Ayres was known and loved by all of Porter County.
He was a kind and caring man who represented his whole region, a servant of education, a state representative who listened. And he was dedicated to constantly and faithfully serving students and teachers, always striving to inspire us all to create a positive environment for “his” citizens.
Ralph was only 67 years old, and his respectful devotion to all his neighbors will be so very missed. He is one of the last of politicians who didn’t care what your political leanings were, but was there for anyone who needed his expertise. I pray that his legacy lives on to continue bless the children. My sincere sympathy to his beloved family whose memories of this honored man will live in their hearts forever. God’s Peace.
Thursday was my birthday, and I now admit to being as old as Methuselah. But I don’t mind having another birthday as long as I am so surrounded by kind and loving family and friends who made the day extra special.
My day included a special birthday surprise at the Y, a breakfast with dear friends, a delicious meal at my favorite restaurant, so many singing telegrams via phone, delightful, meaningful gifts, cards that will be read over and over — handmade cards that are the best, made by great grandchildren, gorgeous flowers and plants, and hugs, hugs, hugs.
I have been so very blessed in having such a happy and fulfilling life, and as I thank God for his great gifts, I also so thank all of my loving friends and family. It truly was a happy birthday.
The YMCA Ringing in Spring run always seems to be the opening of the competitive running season in our area, and the number of runners increases each year. Since running around the block is more than enough for me, it always amazes me that so many people, young and old, enjoy putting their bodies through so much exhaustion. I am great at cheering and passing out food, and even giving high fives while my legs just hold me up in one spot.
Today’s run was a blast for those who ran it, and those who volunteered to make sure the people who like to punish their bodies were treated to lots of “go, go, go,” all the water they could drink, and yummy snacks at the end. Congratulations to all you wild and crazy runners, and thanks to the “Y” staff for getting the season started.
There is something new for spring this year. The Valparaiso Community Schools art teachers are bringing a monthlong innovative festival to downtown Valpo with the Spring into the Arts Festival.
Running April 30 through May 28, art work by children from kindergarten to 12th grade will be displayed in seven different locations. Much of the art will be highlighting local artistic gems and provide historical trivia. Valparaiso University student art work will also be displayed, and there will be a number of spectacular micro-events throughout the month.
There are special T-shirts that can be purchased to show your support, but these are only available until this Monday, April 4. None will be sold after that date, so hurry and go to www.springintothearts.com to order yours. And put a big circle around April 30th so you remember to join all the artists at the kick-off at the Urschel Pavilion at 10:30 a.m.
What a unique idea, and what fun for all of us all month. With our national government finally realizing the benefits of the arts — including music — this unique event will be a joy, and schools that have not included these very important subjects in their curriculum will discover their importance in the lives of students.
