My children are fourth generation Highland Park residents. My husband and I moved to Highland Park so that we could give our children a top-notch education.

When I first heard about the referendum, I was opposed. I didn’t want my kids bused across town or in a large middle school, among other things. In reality, I was just scared of change.

After attending informational meetings, I have learned there is nothing to fear. This referendum is the best choice for our community: all buildings updated for 21st century learning; full-day kindergarten; and safety features like sprinkler systems and safety vestibules.

Most importantly, there will be a brand-new state of the art middle school campus, offering more opportunities for all students. Additional math, science, world language, fine arts, athletics, and extracurriculars all await our children. This will be much to be proud of for our community.

Further, the district cannot afford to continue to function as it is. The Board of Education has approved plans in the event of a failed referendum — the closure of Elm Place, Green Bay, Ravinia and Lincoln, big class sizes, art class conducted from carts.

This isn’t a threat. It is a reality. Some in our community are demanding another option. After four years of studying and researching more than 50 options, there is no other option.

Change is coming whether we like it or not. Embrace it and give our children the opportunity of a lifetime.

Join me in voting “Yes.” Let’s Move 112 Forward.
