A 33-year-old man who was one of three people shot within a block of each other over the weekend in two separate shootings in the West Chatham neighborhood died less than a day after he was shot, officials said.

Carlos James Hemphill was found fatally shot Saturday night in the 8100 block of South Stewart Avenue, and pronounced dead at 10:26 a.m. Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He died from a gunshot wound to the pelvis, the medical examiner determined Monday during an autopsy.

Police had said over the weekend that Hemphill had been standing in the 8100 block of South Harvard Avenue — less than a block from where the medical examiner’s office said he was later found — when he was critically injured in a shooting at 10:05 p.m. Saturday. Someone in a white or gray vehicle fired shots, police said.

Hemphill lived in the 9100 block of South Claremont Avenue, according to the medical examiner.

Hemphill was shot in the right side of the groin and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he initially was listed in critical condition.

The shooting appeared to be gang-related, police said.

Earlier Saturday evening, two men, age 23 and 24, were shot in the 8000 block of South Stewart Avenue.

They were standing in the area when someone in a passing dark vehicle fired shots, a police spokesman said. Both men suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

They were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions stabilized, police said.
