Johnathan Kiwala, director of parks and recreation at Kenilworth’s park district, is a busy man, but he took time Feb. 17 to talk about why he likes his career, what’s great about the district, a cause that’s close to his heart, and more.
Q: What led you into government administration?
A: I studied at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, got my undergraduate degree in political science and my master’s degree in public administration. What attracted me to it is I’ve always been a fan of increasing efficiencies and I’m a big technology nerd. Government’s always a little behind the curve, and I like being able to help get out in front. Plus, I enjoy working with people, so it seemed like a natural for me.
Q: Tell us one great thing about the Kenilworth Park District.
A: There are many good things, not just one! But let’s talk about our two summer camps for kids, the Little Springs camp for ages three to first grade, and the Sports Plus camp for second through sixth grade. This year they run June 13-July 22. They’re really highly regarded on the North Shore; over the past two year’s we’ve broadened what we offer the kids, like science classes and other learning opportunities. .Q: Your business is recreation – what do you personally enjoy?
A: Summer recreation for me was always soccer and baseball. In the winter? Definitely basketball.
Q: What’s your favorite comfort food?
A: My favorite comfort food is my favorite food, period – pizza – so I feel comfortable all the time! I’m a thin crust pepperoni fan, especially a nice, crispy crust.
Q: Finally, tell us about a cause that is dear to you.
A: My cause is my wife, who was diagnosed with brain cancer a little over a year ago. We have been raising funds toward her treatment and we’re having a fundraiser for her on April 23. Information on the fundraiser is at http://teamash.org/. Also, because of our experience, I have been really impressed with the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org/) – it’s simply phenomenal.
