Four Wilmette police officers lifted a car off a 71-year-old woman who was trapped under the vehicle after her husband inadvertently backed into her on Friday night, according to police.
Wilmette Fire Chief Mike McGreal said Monday that the efforts of those officers made it possible for Fire Department paramedics to take the woman to Evanston Hospital in time to receive medical help.
The officers responded shortly after 11 p.m. Friday to the incident on the 400 block of 10th Street, where they learned that the driver was her husband and he had hit her by accident, according to McGreal.

“I think it warrants notice, and I think it’s a big deal that they were able to do this,” he said. “The patient was in (cardiac) arrest, but because they were able to lift the car off her, our guys were able to slide her out and perform CPR and get her to the hospital.”
The initial police report did not indicate that police planned to issue any tickets in connection with the accident.
Police and fire officials said the woman had life-threatening injuries, though McGreal said she was still alive as of Monday morning. A call to Evanston Hospital was not returned Monday afternoon.
