This week take your Valentine or yourself (no judgment) to these 5 Chicago shows: ShowYouSuck, Baio, Diet Cig, Al Scorch and Yawn.
Monday: ShowYouSuck at Empty Bottle.
Free show with one of Chicago’s most consistently entertaining artists? Sign us up, and be on the lookout for an upcoming Blind Spots with the pizza-obsessed rapper.
Monday: Baio at Schubas.
Now that Vampire Weekend’s future looks a little hazy with the departure of Rostam Batmanglij, it’s time to familiarize yourself with the band’s numerous side projects. Now’s your chance because VW bassist Chris Baio is taking his eponymous solo effort to Schubas on Monday.
Wednesday: Diet Cig at Subterranean.
New Paltz, New York seems like a pretty cool place, as the college town has produced some incredible indie rock bands like Quarterbacks (RIP). Diet Cig also hails from there and had one of the most charming EPs of 2015 with “Over Easy.”
Sunday: Al Scorch at Empty Bottle.
Chicago banjo man Al Scorch has one of my favorite seasonal traditions in his Winter Slumber residency at the Empty Bottle. While it’s really early to see a show (the event starts at 2 p.m.), it’s a perfect post-brunch thing to cozy up to the roots musician’s new tunes. His album, one of our most anticipated, is out later this Spring via Bloodshot Records. Oh, I’m also bringing my Dad to this show so come say hi and tell him there’s a future in music journalism for me.
Sunday: Yawn at Schubas.
Just a few weeks ago, Yawn played a free show at Schubas and it was a really good time. If you missed that, or even if you made it and have no Valentine’s Day plans, you should check this out.
