Though there aren’t really life-or-death, rain-or-shine can’t-miss shows, it’s still a consistently solid week when the curious Chicagoan can definitely check out an awesome concert or five. Here are my picks for the week, including Kid Cudi, Heavy Times, How To Dress Well, Wet and Santah.
Tuesday: Kid Cudi at Riviera Theatre

It’s 2016 so normally I wouldn’t recommend a Kid Cudi show. Lately, his releases haven’t been up to snuff to the promise “The Pursuit of Happiness” rapper originally showed on his earlier albums. That said, he’s very likely to appear on Kanye West’s new album “Waves” (he’s been spotted in the studio with him), so a chance to hear unreleased Yeezy material trumps hearing some latter-day milquetoast Cudi.
Tuesday: Heavy Times, Mama, Vamos at Schubas
Vamos had one of RedEye’s favorite local releases of 2016. The rest of the bill rounds out nicely to make for a loud local showcase that, wouldn’t you know, is also free. Tip your bartenders and see you there.
Friday: How To Dress Well (DJ set), Holly Herndon, Tim Kinsella (DJ set), Jimmy Whispers, Bitchin Bajas at Museum of Contemporary Art
Wow! What a bill happening at MCA Chicago. With performers spread throughout the Museum, this after-hours event boasts a damn good lineup along with performance art, food, film screenings for a totally interactive multi-media experience. It’s called ⌘R and it’s a collaboration between the museum and Pitchfork. It’s cheap too! At $15, it’s a steal considering the stacked roster of local and non-local acts.
Friday: Wet at Schubas
I admit I was a little disappointed by Wet’s debut album “Don’t You.” This Brooklyn/Massachusetts pop band is more of a singles outfit, as songs like “All The Ways” and “Deadwater” are greater than the sum of the record’s parts. Who knows, I might be swayed by a stellar live performance, and Schubas is the best place to be swayed on a promising new act.
Saturday: Santah at the Hideout
I’ve covered Chicago’s Santah a bit since the band released its excellent 2015 record “Chico.” The band is at the top-tier of local rock acts, and getting a chance to see songs as good as “Here Are My Shells” live at the Hideout is a really good way to spend a Saturday night. Tickets are available here.
