A neighbor has been charged in the shooting death of a 62-year-old man on the West Side earlier this week, police said Friday.

Charneise Silas, 45, has been charged with aggravated battery in the slaying of Robert Howard Jr., 62, according to a Chicago police news release. Howard was shot Tuesday in the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street, the same block where he had lived, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Howard died of multiple gunshot wounds after being taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:48 p.m. Tuesday.

Silas appeared for a bond hearing Friday afternoon before Cook County Judge Laura Marie Sullivan and was ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Police said the shooting happened about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, and the victim was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

Silas, who also lives in the 1000 block of West Maxwell, was identified as one of those who participated in the man’s killing, police said in the release. The release did not detail what Silas’ role in the shooting was.

Police had been questioning more than one person Thursday evening in connection with the shooting.

The shooting may have been related to a previous altercation with a neighbor, police said earlier.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Silas had been charged with murder.
