Surprise! Throwing a curveball to me (who thought her upcoming eighth album “ANTI” would come out much later this year) and to the rest of the world, Rihanna has released a new song with Drake (!!!) called “Work.” Along with the single, which dropped on BBC1 Radio and Tidal just this morning, Billboard reports that “ANTI” is out sometime this week.
Produced by Boi-1da, the track is an of-the-moment pop banger that asks what would happen if you combined a DJ Mustard-inspired beat with the tropical house production that was ever-present in Justin Bieber’s album “Purpose.” Because Drake and Rihanna have teamed up before on 2010’s RiRi single “What’s My Name” and Drake’s 2011 title track “Take Care,” it’s not shocking to note that the two’s chemistry on this track is undeniable. While “Work” may not reinvent any wheels or mark new pop territory, it’s nice to hear two of pop’s biggest names sound so confident in their respective lanes.
What is even more interesting is that “Work” is the lead single on “ANTI.” Considering Rihanna spent much of last year in what seemed like a roll-out for an album with singles like “Bitch Better Have My Money,” “FourFiveSeconds” and “American Oxygen,” it seems like there’s a chance none of those previously-shared tracks will make the final cut.
With Kanye’s album out Feb. 11, it’s amazing that not even two months into 2016 we’ll have new music from both Yeezy and RiRi. Because “Work” premiered on Tidal and nobody has time for that, listen here. .
