The Lake County Sheriff’s K-9s will soon be showing off new bullet- and stab-protection vests thanks to a charitable donation from nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, according to a news release.

Dax, Diesel and Duke will each receive a vest embroidered with the sentiment, “In memory of K9 Rocco Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.” Rocco, of the Pittsburgh Police Department, sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January 2014. Delivery of the vests is expected within eight to 10 weeks, according to the news release.
Sheriff Curran said in a statement, “We are grateful to the folks at Vested Interest in K9s for establishing a nonprofit focused on the safety of K9s. The donated vests will keep our K9s safe and save the sheriff’s office close to $6,000.”
Vested Interest in K9s Inc. is a charity in East Taunton, Mass., whose mission is to provide bullet- and stab-protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. According to the news release, since its inception in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s has provided more than 1,700 protective vests in 49 states through private and corporate donations at a cost of over $1.6 million. All vests are custom-made in the U.S. by Armor Express in Central Lake, Mich.
The suggested donation to provide one protective vest for law enforcement K-9 is $1,050. Each vest has a value of $1,795-$2,234 and a five-year warranty, according to the release.
