The number of cases of three common sexually transmitted infections increased last year in Chicago, with higher rates tending to be on South and West sides, according to a new Chicago Department of Public Health report.
The geographic patterns for gonorrhea and chlamydia were similar, while the highest rates for syphilis were clustered along the lake on the North Side.
“Typically, in urban settings where there is a higher population, there is the increased likelihood of contracting and transmitting sexually transmitted infections, and higher morbidity,” Melaney Arnold of the Illinois Department of Public Health said in an email. “Other factors that can lead to higher infection rates are high poverty, access to health care and transportation.”

The report showed these types of infections disproportionately affect young people. Those ages 13 to 24 accounted for about 60 percent of gonorrhea cases and 67 percent of chlamydia cases, while 44 percent of primary and secondary syphilis cases occurred in those younger than 30, according to the report. Chlamydia was the most reported in both men and women, with a total of 27,320 cases in 2014. Gonorrhea cases for males were the highest since 2010, while for females, cases were the lowest since 2010. Incidents of those two infections concentrated in the typically poorer, more diverse parts of the city. Syphilis cases decreased for both sexes, but a larger proportion of cases were men who had sex with men, nearly 60 percent, according to the report. And the geographic pattern for syphilis was different than for gonorrhea and chlamydia.
