Officials say a truck hit a support on the Edens Expressway near Wilmette, causing delays and closing lanes on the expressway.

Wilmette Police Chief Bring King said Illinois Department of Transportation officials asked Wilmette authorities for assistance around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, shortly after a truck headed south on I-94 struck one of the I-beam supports of the Lake Avenue Edens Expressway overpass.

“We blocked traffic until IDOT crews arrived, and after that our people were relieved by IDOT crews,” King said. He said he did not know more about the collision. He said the police department would normally be alerted to an accident on I-94 only if it involved injuries, “and this did not come in as a report to us.”

The incident closed the outside lanes of I-94 in both directions, King said, which then required the closure of both the southbound entrance ramp from westbound Lake and the northbound exit from I-94 to west Lake Avenue, while IDOT crews determined the level of damage to the overpass.

While the ramps were closed, traffic was directed to the Willow Road and Old Orchard I-94 ramps as alternate routes.

King said shortly before 4:45 p.m. that IDOT officials had let the department know that all lanes on I-94 had reopened.
