Award: Mundelein High School’s Byte Club took the Top Overall Award at the CodeDay Chicago competition held at the Blue1647 Tech Innovation Center in Chicago. The event is a 24-hour code-a-thon where students pitch project ideas to each other and then work to create an app, game, website or program within a set time limit. The projects are then judged by local and regional technology professionals and some of the projects earn awards. “Our students created a game called ‘Exit Strategy’ where the player must escape randomly-generated walls closing in on their position by moving quickly off the screen,” said Matt Farmer, MHS instructor and advisor to the group. MHS students who participated in person are Rygar Carvajal, William Fitzgerald, Dinyar Kadkhodaian and Kenney Stepney while Pawel Michalski took part remotely from another location. CodeDay is a series of student programming events held across the world.

Award: Little Fort Elementary School has been named a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award winner, and was recognized at special ceremony recently in Washington, D.C. Little Fort is one of just 525 schools across the country to earn the distinction. Let’s Move! Active Schools, is a sub-initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Campaign. To earn a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas: physical education; physical activity before- and after-school; physical activity during school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement. Little Fort was chosen in part for the efforts of school nurse Mary Colver, who has been instrumental in implementing a number of healthy initiatives at the school. Colver has been recognized nationally for those initiatives. She traveled to D.C., where in addition to representing Little Fort, she gave a presentation about Little Fort’s fitness efforts, most notably, the school’s morning “Get Up And Move” music dance time. During the morning dance time, all students and staff members stand up and dance along to a different student-selected song every day. Additionally, Little Fort was recognized for an hour-long Get Moving Before School Exercise Program. The school and all of the teachers are also being lauded for their short Brain Breaks, which allow students to re-energize and re-focus during different parts of the school day. Little Fort is the only school from Lake County being recognized as a Let’s Move! Active School. As an Active School, Little Fort will a receive banner, certificate and congratulatory letter from the First Lady.
