Montgomery Police are not fundraising right now, and anyone who calls soliciting donations on behalf of the department is a scam artist, they warned this week.

Police said they’ve been contacted by several local business who have been recently called by someone seeking donations on behalf of the Montgomery Police Department.

“The Montgomery Police Department is not conducting fundraising efforts at this time,” police said in a news release. Anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to work on behalf of the department should collect the caller’s name and call-back information and contact Sgt. Elizabeth Palko at 630-897-8707, ext. 2231.

“Simply having the words ‘police’ or ‘law enforcement’ in an organization’s name doesn’t mean police are members of the group,” police said. “The organization should be able to provide you with written information describing the programs your donation will support.”

Montgomery Police said residents who receive similar calls on behalf of other departments or fundraising organizations should ask for the caller’s identification and contact the organization for verification before offering a donation.
