Theatergoers thirsting for entertainment should find it with Naperville Central High School’s presentation of “Don’t Drink the Water,” running Thursday through Saturday.
“The reason I chose this play is I think it is one of the funniest Woody Allen shows out there,” said director Thomas Ulbrich. “The situation is outrageous and just a whole lot of fun.”
Based on a play that premiered on Broadway in 1966 and was made into a movie three years later, “Don’t Drink the Water” follows three American tourists on vacation in a communist country. When they get into trouble with police, they seek refuge in the American Embassy and hilarity ensues.
“The show has a lot of physical comedy and should prove to be an entertaining evening,” Ulbrich said.
A cast and crew of about 35 students bring the show to life, said junior Jenna Ranieri, the assistant student director.
“I have adored spending these past few months surrounded by the talent in this show,” said Ranieri, 17. “I wanted to direct this show originally because of how much I wanted to learn from Mr. Ulbrich, and I was not disappointed. Every day is a new learning experience and I cherish all of them.”
Thursday’s performance of “Don’t Drink the Water” is at 7:30 p.m. and at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
