Recently, fellow Tribune photographer Nuccio DiNuzzo and I traveled to Seattle for the Bears’ trampling by the Seahawks. Seeing as the Bears didn’t score a single point the entire game, the images weren’t anything stellar.
However, after the game I spent the next few days exploring San Juan Island north of Seattle. The island is one of an archipelago accessible via a ferry from the town of Anacortes. I absolutely love this place. It’s gorgeous beyond words and incredibly peaceful and serene, which is a stark contrast to my time covering gun violence in the city of Chicago.
For two days, I walked the island taking in the sights and sounds. While there I was fortunate enough to see an abundance of wildlife, including a sea lion catching fish near Lime Klin Point State Park, a fox at San Juan Island National Historical Park and orcas (sadly too far to photograph) off the shoreline. Though I love the energy of a city, it’s really nice to step away from it on occasion and reconnect with nature.
At night I slept in wonderful little camping hut I found online. I was there during the supermoon, so it was fun to watch it rise up over the treeline of a neighboring island. The next morning I wandered into the small town of Friday Harbor and had breakfast with the locals while watching the ferries come and go.
Above is a group of pictures from my time there.
