A small group of residents gathered recently to socialize, network and share their passion for their hobbies and art during an event sponsored by South Shore Arts.

“We are not a class or instruction,” South Shore Arts Crown Point branch manager Leona Jurincie said, “just an informal get-together to perform our individual art forms and offer support for each other.”

The recent Artists Gathering session found six women sketching, sewing, painting and creating mosaic art.

“I just moved to Crown Point in April and came downtown to see what was available in my new neighborhood,” Taylor Brooks said as she began to fit small triangle pieces cut from magazines into a mosaic piece of art. “This group is a great place to come to while working on my art. And I appreciate the tips I’m getting from others.”

Jurincie said the free, monthly Saturday morning get-togethers formerly were held at the South Shore Arts Hammond Substation but were on hiatus for a few years.

“We decided to bring them back to the community, this time adding our Crown Point location,” she said, of the branch located one block from the Courthouse Square. “We welcome all levels of artists to come and watch others in their medium, find a new habit, or learn something new. We’re all about fellowship in art and creativity.”

Rachael Chapman of Crown Point also is new to the area and was pleased to find a comfortable venue to sit, relax and work on her projects.

“It’s motivating to be around other artists,” she said at a recent session, as she sewed an ear on an elephant she was creating for her friend’s baby shower. “The atmosphere is wonderful and I enjoy the lively discussion.”

Judy Harold of Merrillville was shopping downtown during the recent Saturday session when she saw the announcement of the Artists Gathering in the South Shore Arts front window.

“I wasn’t able to make the one taking place today, but I will definitely call to register for the next one,” she said. “I’m just starting to renew my interest and skills in acrylic painting and I would love to be around people that could give me constructive criticism.”

Harold said the Artists Gatherings seemed to be an unusual opportunity for both new and experienced artists.

“Everyone needs feedback, and you never know what you’ll hear to help you improve,” she said.

In addition to the Crown Point location, Artists Gatherings also are held once a month at the South Shore Arts Hammond Substation. For more information on programs offered by South Shore Arts, call 219-836-1839.
