A loaded, stolen handgun was recovered by police during a Friday evening traffic stop in Aurora, police said.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, members of the department’s Special Operations Group spotted a suspicious vehicle around 9:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Coventry Lane.

The vehicle stood out to officers as one they knew to be allegedly involved in gang activity, Ferrelli said.

When officers went to investigate they allegedly smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and asked the driver, Jamarcus Reynolds, 18, and passenger Dylan Scholemer, 23, to step outside. At that point, both men and the vehicle were searched.

Ferrelli said officers located a loaded 9mm handgun on Reynolds and 11.5 grams of marijuana inside the car.

The handgun, which apparently belonged to Reynolds, 2000 block of Fox Pointe Drive, came back stolen from Aurora, police said.

Reynolds was charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

Scholemer, 2100 block of Clementi Lane, Aurora, was charged with possession of marijuana, police said.
