A man who set out with a fellow gang member to kill a member of a rival gang in Chicago’s Fernwood neighborhood in October 2013 killed their target and also his accomplice, according to prosecutors.

Rickey Winfield, 21, was arrested July 19 in Norfolk, Neb., after witnesses told police he was talking about a Chicago slaying, and officers determined he was wanted on a murder warrant. On Sunday, he was ordered held in lieu of $2 million bail in the Oct. 16, 2013, killings of Martellis Griffis, 22, outside his home in the 10500 block of South Lafayette Avenue, and William Aikens, 28, who also tried to shoot Griffis, prosecutors said.

Early in the afternoon on Oct. 16, 2013, Winfield and Aikens borrowed an acquaintance’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo from the person’s home near 106th Street and Indiana Avenue, said Cook County state’s attorney’s spokesman Steve Campbell.

The two drove past Griffis’ home and parked, then walked to the home, where they saw Griffis in the backyard, prosecutors said. About 3:25 p.m., Winfield and Aikens opened fire on Griffis, who was shot, but Winfield’s gunfire also hit Aikens, prosecutors said.

Winfield fled on foot, leaving Aikens in the alley, and drove off in the car, prosecutors said. He returned to near 106th and Indiana, and when he saw his friends again, he told them that “s— happened,” and at another point gave someone a gun to get rid of, prosecutors said.

The day of the attack, two ambulances were sent to 105th Street and Wentworth Avenue for a shooting, about three blocks west of Lafayette, authorities said at the time.

After he was shot, Aikens collapsed and died in the 10500 block of South Perry Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 1700 block of North Lotus Avenue.

Multiple witnesses identified Winfield in the case. A murder warrant for Winfield, whose last known address was listed as in the 3400 block of East Guthrie Street in East Chicago, was issued in May, according to court records.
