Aurora police have taken more than 60 weapons off the streets since the first of the year, Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.

“Taking guns off the street and holding those who illegally possess them accountable has always been one of the highest priorities for the Aurora police,” Ferrelli said.

As of May 31, 59 weapons were recovered during searches, investigations and traffic stops. Recently two additional weapons were recovered by police, adding to that number.

Ferrelli said a loaded gun was recently found and confiscated from inside a vehicle driven by Donata Parker, 34, 500 block of Fifth Street.

Parker was stopped around 9:30 a.m. July 16 in the 500 block of Hill Avenue and charged with driving on a suspended license. As a result of the stop, Parker’s vehicle was searched and officers allegedly located a loaded handgun and a small amount of marijuana.

Parker was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon and felony unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He was also charged with possession of marijuana and driving on a suspended license.

On July 14, officers took an additional weapon off the street. Ferrelli said a 16-year-old Aurora resident was charged with two counts of felony unlawful use of a weapon after a traffic stop at about 8:30 p.m. at Lake Street and New York Street.

Ferrelli said the teen was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Aurora man. Police stopped the vehicle for having a broken windshield and because the driver’s license came back suspended.

During a search, police said a gun was allegedly found in the 16-year-old’s possession. Ferrelli said the gun came back as being stolen from Minnesota.

“We believe that every time a gun is taken off the street, a shooting has been avoided and very likely, a murder not committed,” Ferrelli said.
