A group of scam artists is allegedly targeting Kendall County residents, and Kendall County Sheriff’s Department deputies are telling residents to be leery of accepting offers for unsolicited work
Deputies said a resident in an unincorporated area near Yorkville reported being scammed by a group of men who were offering to sealcoat the resident’s driveway at a discounted price.
The resident apparently agreed to have the work done and gave the men cash to complete the project. He reported that the men completed a small portion of the job before leaving to “get more materials.” Deputies said the men never returned.
The resident described the first man as approximately 6-foot tall and 200 pounds. The second man was described as approximately 6-foot tall and 225 pounds. The third man was described as 5-foot-6, 150 pounds.
The vehicle the men arrived in was described as a newer model tan or light brown Ford pickup truck with a crew cab and cap on the bed of the truck.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to not have unsolicited work done to their homes. Deputies said if someone wants to perform work, residents should follow the 1-2-3 rule. Wait one day to speak to family members, wait a second day to speak to friends and neighbors about it, and wait a third day to see if the workers come back to push to hire them for work.
“During the three-day waiting period, contact a local reputable company to obtain a price comparison,” deputies said in a news release. “Another rule to live by: If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
