Wine lovers can have their day at The Grape Escape in Munster’s Centennial Park.

Set for 1 to 8 p.m. July 18, the event features the chance to sample an array of wines in an art market atmosphere.

The food will be complemented by a fine arts fair and live music, courtesy of Taylor & Aaron, Nomad Planets and Fortunate Sons, who dish a tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

But the main attraction is the popular fermented grape juice, which will have a definite Midwest bent and can be purchased by the bottle.

“So far, we have five wine vendors,” said Jessica Costello, recreation supervisor for the Munster Parks and Recreation Department.

In existence for several years, The Grape Escape is steadily building a following for its summertime bash that features the fruit-born alcoholic beverage.

“I’d say it’s become a lot more popular over the years,” Costello said.

She said she believes part of the attraction is the vast and varied Hoosier representation when it comes to the wine.

“I think it is the different wineries that (are located) all over Indiana,” Costello said.

Among those participating: Easley Winery, of Indianapolis; Windy Ridge Vineyard & Winery, of Cayuga; Madison County Winery, of Markleville; Carpenter Creek Cellars, of Remington; and Whyte Horse Winery, of Monticello.

“We make about 20 different wines,” said Jackie Kibler, assistant wine maker for Whyte Horse.

Kibler said Whyte Horse will have its most popular wine at The Grape Escape.

It is a sweet red wine called Chautauqua Red, made with native concord grapes, and best served chilled.

Another wine festival taking place on Saturday is the Valparaiso Wine Festiva, hosted by Valparaiso Events, at Central Park Plaza.

Tickets are sold out for that event, which is expected to draw about 1,000 people.
